Our Story

From a simple question to a national platform

BongoChat was born from a simple but powerful question: why should 180 million Bangladeshis rely entirely on foreign platforms for their most private conversations?

In a country where mobile communication is the lifeline of daily life — from family conversations and business deals to community organizing and civic engagement — the apps we trust with our words carry enormous responsibility. Yet every major messaging platform used in Bangladesh is developed, hosted, and governed from outside the country. The data of millions of Bangladeshis flows through servers in distant jurisdictions, governed by laws and policies that were never designed with Bangladeshi interests in mind.

This is not just a privacy concern — it is a question of digital sovereignty. When a nation's primary communication infrastructure is owned and operated by foreign entities, that nation loses control over its digital destiny. We saw this as both a problem and an opportunity.

2024 — The Idea

A team of Bangladeshi engineers, designers, and entrepreneurs in Dhaka decided to ask a bold question: what if we built our own? Not a clone of existing apps, but something designed from the ground up for how Bangladeshis communicate — with privacy as the foundation, not an afterthought.

Development started with a clear set of principles: end-to-end encryption by default, data minimization, no advertising, and optimization for Bangladesh's diverse network conditions. The team chose the Signal Protocol — the gold standard for E2EE — and built a lightweight, fast codebase designed to perform beautifully even on affordable smartphones and on 2G/3G connections.

Bongo Software Limited was formally incorporated in Dhaka, Bangladesh, as the legal entity behind BongoChat. With a passionate team of engineers, designers, product managers, and business strategists — all Bangladeshi — the company set out to build not just an app, but a platform that could stand alongside the world's best, while being rooted in local values and law.

2025 — Launch & Growth

BongoChat launched on Google Play Store with its core features: end-to-end encrypted messaging, voice and video calls, Moments, Stories, BongoQR friend discovery, and Bongo Points rewards. The reception from Bangladeshi users has been overwhelmingly positive — confirming what we always believed: Bangladeshis want and deserve a platform built with their needs, culture, and rights at the center.
